| Here at the Gloucesterman website, you'll find analysis and appreciation of Bayliss's novels: Prologos, Gloucesterbook and Gloucestertide. These books constitute the vast Gloucesterman series, Jonathan Bayliss's lifework. We at jonathanbayliss.com eagerly await the publication of his forthcoming book, Gloucestermas. Gloucester, Massachusetts is the canvas that Bayliss uses to mount his epic creations. Using history, mythology, art and science, Bayliss constructs a visionary new Gloucester. On this forbidding and fascinating mind-stage, life, ritual and meaning are carried in various vessels. Bayliss's dramatis personae are the products of a history that's disappearing just as economic forces are taking the land from beneath them. They struggle against the physical entropy that technology has unleashed upon the earth, as well as the spiritual kind that their culture is marketing to them as the brave new world. Jonathan Bayliss writes uncompromisingly cerebral books, and their rewards for the committed reader are many. This series is too important to be neglected as difficult or academic. To help readers enjoy these eccentric but eloquent works, this site contains a glossary of the places and people Bayliss has hidden behind mythic masks, as well as investigations of Bayliss's themes and references. There will also be photo essays containing information and images of the Gloucesterman system. This website is unaffiliated with Jonathan Bayliss himself.
